FAQ’s

What is malaria?

Malaria is a serious disease caused by parasites transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes. It is found in many tropical and subtropical regions around the world and can cause severe illness if left untreated.

Do I need malaria tablets for my trip?

This depends on where you are travelling, the length of your stay, and what you are planning to do when you get there. Our travel professionals can advise whether malaria prevention medication is recommended for your destination.

How do malaria tablets work?

Malaria tablets help prevent malaria infection by stopping the parasite from developing in your body if you are bitten by an infected mosquito.

When should I start taking malaria tablets?

We prescribe tablets that are taken two days before travel, one each day whilst you are away.

Can children have malaria tablets?

Yes, we calculate what they will need based on their weight.

Are malaria tablets 100% effective?

No malaria prevention method is 100% effective. Malaria tablets reduce your risk but should always be used alongside mosquito bite prevention measures. This can include insect repellent, long-sleeved clothing and mosquito nets.

What are common side effects of malaria tablets?

This depends on the medication but some people may experience mild symptoms such as nausea, stomach upset, headaches, or vivid dreams. Side effects are temporary and manageable.

Which malaria tablet is best for me?

We assess your destination, medical history, age, current medications, and health factors.

Can I take malaria tablets if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Some malaria medications can be taken during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding, our clinicians will give you advice on this.

What if I forget to take a dose?

Follow the instructions provided with your medication. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Contact our clinic or a healthcare professional if you are unsure what to do.

Can malaria be treated if I catch it?

Yes, malaria can be treated, but quick diagnosis and treatment makes all the difference. If you get symptoms such as fever, chills, headaches, muscle aches, or flu-like symptoms during or after travel you must seek medical attention immediately and mention your recent travel history.

Do I still need mosquito repellent if I am taking malaria tablets?

Yes. Malaria tablets should always be combined with mosquito bite prevention measures for the best protection against malaria and other mosquito-borne illnesses.

How far in advance of travel should I book my appointment?

We recommend at least 4–6 weeks before departure. This allows enough time for travel advice, vaccinations, and malaria prevention planning.
