Fungal infections of the skin and nails are common conditions caused by micro-organisms like dermatophytes, yeasts, or moulds that thrive in warm, moist environments. 

Skin infections are rashes that look red or inflamed sometimes circular with raised borders, the skin is peeling or cracking and it can be accompanies by intense itching or burning. If left untreated the infection can easily spread to surround areas or to other people. If the skin barrier is broken from scratching, this can also potentially cause bacterial infections.

Nail fungal infections can make nails turn yellow, white or brown, cause the nail to thicken up, become brittle, crumbly and lift off the nail bed. If left untreated it can cause permanent nail damage where the nail becomes distorted or fragile and can break off. Thickened nails can make footwear painful. The fungus can re-infect surrounding skin and nails and can cause severe complications for those with diabetes, poor circulation or with weakened immune systems. This includes deep bacterial skin infections, non-healing foot ulcers, or severe soft-tissue complications.

Most mild skin infections often require topical antifungals (creams or sprays), however nail infections can often need prolonged treatment with specialized antifungal lacquer or prescription oral medication.
